Six overseas-born players named in squad for 2026 ASEAN Championship
VOV.VN - Head coach Kim Sang Sik on June 15 announced a 28-player Vietnam squad for preparations for the 2026 ASEAN Championship, also known as the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026, including six overseas-born players.
The squad shows a combination of experienced players, promising young talents, naturalised players and players of Vietnamese origin who have been performing well for their clubs.
Notably, the team will again include naturalised and Vietnamese-origin players such as Nguyen Xuan Son, Dang Van Lam and Do Hoang Hen, alongside newcomers Le Giang Patrik, Nguyen Tai Loc and Ngo Dang Khoa.
The addition of players with diverse training backgrounds, strong physical attributes and a modern footballing mindset is expected to provide the team with more options, increase competition for places and strengthen squad quality.
Kim also retained the core group of experienced players who have featured regularly for the national team over the years. Their international experience is expected to play an important role in maintaining stability as the team prepares for upcoming assignments.
Under the plan, Vietnam will regroup in Hanoi on June 22. Following a period of domestic training, the team will travel to the Republic of Korea from July 2-14 for a training camp and three international friendlies aimed at assessing personnel and refining tactical plans.
After returning from the training camp, the team will continue preparations in Hanoi before facing Myanmar in an international friendly at Thai Nguyen Stadium on July 18.
The match will provide the coaching staff with an opportunity to further assess the squad and complete final preparations ahead of the 2026 ASEAN Championship.
