Vietnam invited to 2026 Continental Futsal Championship in Thailand
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s futsal team has been invited to compete against Russia, Thailand, Afghanistan and New Zealand at the 2026 Continental Futsal Championship, an international friendly tournament organized by the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) in early August.
The tournament, held once or twice a year by FAT, serves as a platform for Thailand’s national futsal team to gain international experience and improve competitiveness. The event regularly features leading teams from Asia and around the world, with Vietnam last taking part in 2022.
Four years later, coach Diego Giustozzi and his squad will return to the competition, scheduled for August 1-6 at the Nonthaburi Provincial Indoor Stadium, which hosted futsal matches at the 2025 SEA Games.
Among the five participating teams, Vietnam is ranked fourth in FIFA’s futsal rankings at No. 22, behind Russia (No. 7), host Thailand (No. 11) and Afghanistan (No. 21), while ranking above New Zealand (No. 48). With all of Vietnam’s opponents having competed at the 2024 FIFA Futsal World Cup, the tournament will provide a strong test for the team.
The five teams will compete in a single round-robin format, with Vietnam opening against Russia on August 1, followed by matches against Thailand, Afghanistan and New Zealand.
The tournament will serve as part of Giustozzi’s preparations for the Indoor Games later this year, while also helping lay the groundwork for Vietnam’s bid to qualify for the 2028 FIFA Futsal World Cup. Earlier in 2026, Vietnam reached the quarterfinals of the Asian tournament and finished third in Southeast Asia.
After the 2026 National Futsal Championship concludes on July 27, the team is scheduled to regroup in Ho Chi Minh City to prepare for the tournament.
