Five Vietnamese players to compete at Badminton Asia Junior Championships
VOV.VN - Vietnam will send a five-player squad to compete at the 2026 Badminton Asia Junior Championships, scheduled to take place in Yatsushiro, Japan, from June 26 to July 5.
The tournament brings together Asia's top under-19 badminton talents and is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious junior events in the region, having served as a launching pad for many of the sport's future stars.
This year's championships will be divided into two stages, with the team competition taking place from June 26-30, followed by individual events from July 1-5.
Vietnam will compete only in the individual events, fielding five players - Nguyen Tat Duy Loi, Nguyen Dinh Dat, Lo Trieu Huy, Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen and Pham Thi Truc An.
Among them, Thu Huyen is considered Vietnam's leading hope for a breakthrough performance. The 15-year-old player won a silver medal in the girls' singles event at the Asian U15 Championships in 2024 and has continued to make significant progress over the past two years.
According to the latest rankings released by the Badminton World Federation, Thu Huyen climbed 34 places to world No. 296. She also recently captured the women's singles title at the 2026 National Junior Badminton Championships.
Vietnamese badminton officials view her as one of the country's most promising young talents and a potential representative for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal.
Despite her recent progress, Thu Huyen faces a formidable challenge in Japan. Traditional badminton powerhouses including China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, India and Chinese Taipei are all expected to field strong squads and remain among the favourites in most events.
Thu Huyen's journey in Yatsushiro is expected to be highly challenging, as Asian badminton powerhouses—including China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, India, and Chinese Taipei—all boast numerous high-caliber players. These nations have consistently dominated events at Asian youth tournaments for many years.
