Within two hours of the rehearsal 4,270 residents of My An commune, 200 pupils and 100 fishermen were promptly evacuated.

The drill also included activities such as search and rescue work, rebuilding houses for local people and clearing the surrounding areas.

According to Major General Nguyen Quy Nhon, Vice Commander of Military Zone 5, the run through helps raise public awareness and skills to cope with natural disasters.

Le Huu Loc, Chairman of Binh Dinh People’s Committee, said through the drill, provincial authorities have drawn lessons for future rescue and relief work.

In the event of a tsunami, the south central coastal region is forecast to seriously suffer from its impacts.
