VOV.VN - Vietnam places great importance on relations with India and regards the country as a trusted and steadfast friend with deep historical and cultural links, National Assembly (NA) Chairman Tran Thanh Man said while receiving Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Tshering Wangchuk Sherpa in Hanoi on June 23.

At the meeting, Tran Thanh Man acknowledged the ambassador’s efforts in boosting Vietnam-India ties, particularly his contributions to coordinating the successful state visit to India by Party General Secretary and State President To Lam.

Through the ambassador, Tran Thanh Man conveyed his regards to Chairman of the Rajya Sabha C.P. Radhakrishnan and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, while expressing hope to welcome leaders of the Indian parliament to Vietnam in the near future.

Man welcomed the strong progress in bilateral ties, especially following To Lam’s state visit to India and the elevation of bilateral relations to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which has opened a new phase of deeper, more substantive and effective cooperation.

He affirmed that Vietnam’s National Assembly will work closely with India’s legislature to realize agreements and common perceptions reached by both nations’ senior leaders.

The NA leader asked the ambassador to continue coordinating with relevant agencies to effectively implement outcomes from the visit, with the goal of raising bilateral trade to US$25 billion, expanding two-way investment and making science and technology a new pillar of cooperation.

He also called for broader cooperation in defence and security, education, healthcare, culture and people-to-people exchanges.

Man also noted the positive cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries and applauded the establishment of the India-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentarians’ Group in the Indian parliament.

He said Vietnam’s National Assembly has also established the Vietnam-India Friendship Parliamentarians’ Group and suggested stronger delegation exchanges, cooperation among specialised committees and exchanges of experience in legislation, supervision and decision-making on major national issues.

Tshering Wangchuk Sherpa, for his part, thanked Tran Thanh Man for the meeting and said Indian leaders, scholars, media and public opinion all highly value the results of To Lam’s state visit to India, describing it as highly significant in giving added impetus to bilateral ties.

The Indian government will coordinate closely with Vietnamese agencies to effectively carry out outcomes from the visit, he told his guest.

The ambassador also appreciated Tran Thanh Man’s directions on promoting bilateral ties, particularly in high-level exchanges, trade, investment, science and technology, innovation and digital transformation.

He said he will continue efforts to serve as a bridge for cultural and religious cooperation and people-to-people exchanges to strengthen mutual trust and understanding, adding that India is studying plans to bring the Buddha relic to Vietnam again for enshrinement in the near future.

The ambassador highlighted parliamentary cooperation and people-to-people exchanges as important pillars of bilateral ties.

He conveyed greetings and best wishes from Indian parliamentary leaders to Tran Thanh Man and delivered a letter from Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inviting the NA Chairman to visit India.

The top legislator accepted the invitation, saying that the visit will be arranged at an appropriate time.
