Exquisite art of Cham brocade weaving on banks of Hau River

VOV.VN - The traditional brocade weaving craft of the Cham ethnic community in Chau Phong Commune, An Giang Province, which dates back to the early 19th century, has evolved to support tourism while continuing to meet the practical needs of the Cham Muslim community living along the Hau River.

In 2023, the traditional brocade weaving craft of Cham ethnic group in Chau Phong is recognised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a national intangible cultural heritage, underscoring the craft’s immense cultural and historical value.

With their skillful hands, Cham women play a central role in the art of brocade weaving. Creating a finished piece involves multiple intricate steps, including soaking the yarn, and dyeing it with natural colours extracted from plants, such as indigo, red, yellow, green, and black, followed by drying and weaving.

The distinctive character of the Cham people’s brocade lies in their weaving techniques, which produce a rich variety of colours and intricate patterns on each piece.

The patterns on Cham brocade fabrics are diverse and colourful.

Locals still preserve old looms and intricate weaving techniques that require both dexterity and experience.

Creating beautiful products requires great concentration from skilled artisans.

The weaving craft is mainly practiced by women, passed down through many generations.

Weaving helps women improve their lives, with an average income of VND150,000-200,000 per day.

Born in 1958, Mohamad, a third-generation craftsman, has been involved with weaving for nearly 50 years. He shares that the craft not only creates stable jobs for Cham women but also encourages them to preserve it and spread its cultural values to the world.
