VOV.VN - Chom Hom market, located along the historic Xa No Canal in Vi Thanh ward, Can Tho city, offers visitors one of the most authentic cultural experiences in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.

Unlike modern markets filled with bright signs and permanent stalls, farmers arrive there before dawn carrying freshly harvested vegetables, fruits, fish and other local products, creating a vibrant marketplace that reflects the daily rhythm of rural life.

Like its name to reflect its riverside customs, this market has no stalls, shelves, or sturdy roofs.

Rather than using tables or formal stalls, vendors typically display their goods on tarpaulins spread across the ground, while customers browse and negotiate from low stools or in a crouched position in an open-air setting.

From high above, the market looks like a breathtakingly beautiful, perfectly aligned, and vibrant picture.

Beginning as early as 2 or 3 a.m. and staying busy till around 9 a.m. or 9:30 a.m., the market becomes a gathering place for farmers from surrounding villages.

Visitors can find seasonal fruits, freshwater fish, shrimp, edible flowers and wild vegetables that are deeply connected to the culinary traditions of southern Vietnam.

Locals often call it a rural market as goods on sale are produced from their own gardens and farms.

Products such as water lilies, sesban flowers, climbing fern shoots and various freshwater species provide a fascinating introduction to ingredients rarely seen outside the Mekong Delta.

Nguyen Thi Tam, 60, shares, "People here have long been accustomed to life on the waterways. I bring the shrimp and fish I raise or catch to the market to earn a little income, then use the money to buy essentials such as sugar, fish sauce and other household necessities."

This distinctive tradition has given the market its unique identity and enduring charm.

Beyond its agricultural products, the market offers visitors an opportunity to experience the warmth and hospitality of local people.

The market is also a "paradise" for food lovers who appreciate nostalgic cuisine. Tourists can easily find traditional dishes and famous specialties of the Mekong Delta such as steaming pots of sweet soup, fragrant sticky rice, or colourful platters of rice cakes and banana cakes.

Friendly conversations, traditional trading customs and the relaxed atmosphere create a cultural experience that many travellers consider more memorable than conventional tourist attractions.

Nguyen Tan Phat, a tourist from Ben Tre ward, says, "Stepping into this market feels like returning to my childhood. I've come across so many familiar sights from the countryside, and everything seems just as it was 15 years ago."

With its rustic charm and bustling atmosphere, Chom Hom market offers visitors a glimpse into the daily lives and trading culture of the Mekong Delta people.
