Obsession, Hollywood horror phenomenon, hits Vietnamese cinemas
VOV.VN - After making waves in Hollywood with impressive box-office results and emerging as one of the standout titles in the race to the 2026 Oscars, psychological horror film Obsession officially opened in Vietnamese cinemas on June 19.

Directed by Curry Barker, a digital content creator known for his independent short films, Obsession has become a rare Hollywood phenomenon. Made on a production budget of just US$750,000, the film earned US$17 million on its opening weekend and set a rare box-office record, with each subsequent weekend surpassing its opening-weekend revenue. By its fifth week, the film added another US$19 million, bringing global earnings to US$300 million.
The film’s success has drawn comparisons with Jordan Peele’s Get Out (2017), a low-budget horror film that received four Oscar nominations and won Best Original Screenplay. At 27, Barker has turned Obsession into one of the most talked-about independent horror films of this awards season.
Obsession arrives at a time when horror continues to strengthen its position in Hollywood, following an awards season that saw the genre deliver several outstanding achievements.
A major highlight of the film is Inde Navarrette’s performance as Nikki. Starting as the close friend of lead character Bear (Michael Johnston), Nikki gradually becomes an obsessive lover before evolving into a dangerously obsessive pursuer. Navarrette has drawn praise for balancing vulnerability with frightening intensity.
After earning a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore, Obsession officially joined Vietnam’s summer movie lineup as one of the season’s notable new releases.
The film stars Michael Johnston (Teen Wolf, Supergirl), Inde Navarrette (13 Reasons Why, Superman & Lois), and Andy Richter.
At the Vietnamese box office, the film has posted encouraging early results. Just two days after release, Obsession climbed into the top tier of daily box-office rankings with nearly VND2 billion (US$76,000) in revenue, while maintaining steady momentum.
